DNA Methylation & Cadmium Exposure in utero An Epigenetic Analysis Activity for Students UNC-Chapel Hill’s Superfund Research Program

چکیده
Cadmium is one of the highest priority chemicals regulated under the EPA’s Superfund program and can enter soil, water, and air from mining and industrial processes, burning coal and household wastes, where it can be taken up by fish, plants and animals. This activity features the research of a scientist who is funded by UNC-Chapel Hill’s Superfund Research Program to investigate the link between exposure to cadmium and associated human health effects through the mechanism of epigenetic modification to DNA. This activity is targeted to students in Advanced Placement (AP) Biology or college-level biology courses.

Effect of Exposure to 900 MHz GSM Mobile Phone Radiofrequency Radiation on Estrogen Receptor Methylation Status in Colon Cells of Male Sprague Dawley Rats
Background: Over the past several years, the rapidly increasing use of mobile phones has raised global concerns about the biological effects of exposure to radiofrequency (RF) radiation. Numerous studies have shown that exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) can be associated with effects on the nervous, endocrine, immune, cardiovascular, hematopoietic and ocular systems. In spite of genetic...
متن کاملPrenatal exposure to cadmium and cotinine and CpG island DNA methylation in mother–infant pairs
A precise biological mechanism by which cadmium acts as a developmental toxicant is unknown but is suggested to include an epigenetic basis. In prior work, we analyzed CpG island methylation levels within gene promoters (n=16,421) in leukocytes collected from mothers and their infants from a pregnancy cohort in Durham County, North Carolina. The CpG methylation levels were examined in relations...
متن کاملDNA Methylation and Its Role in the Development of Leukemia
Epigenetic changes play an essential role in cancer pathogenesis. It has been established by next-generation sequencing that more than 50% of the human cancers carry mutations in mechanisms involved in the organization of the chromatin and epigenetic regulations. DNA methylation is among the most common epigenetic changes in leukemia. In contrast to DNA mutations which are passively inherited f...
متن کاملEvaluation of epigenetic changes of liver tissue induced by oral administration of Titanium dioxide nanoparticles and possible protective role of Nigella Sativa oil, in adult male albino rats
Objective (s): Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have been recognized as biologically inert material and have been used in a multitude of applications. Nevertheless, the negative impact on the human health is not yet well understood. Aim of the work: The study attempted to evaluate the epigenetic changes of the genome, in the form of DNA methylation in liver tissue samples, resulting fr...
متن کاملGenome-wide DNA methylation at birth in relation to in utero arsenic exposure and the associated health in later life
BACKGROUND In utero arsenic exposure may alter fetal developmental programming by altering DNA methylation, which may result in a higher risk of disease in later life. We evaluated the association between in utero arsenic exposure and DNA methylation (DNAm) in cord blood and its influence in later life. METHODS Genome-wide DNA methylation in cord blood from 64 subjects in the Taiwanese matern...
